How are family and friends affected by alcohol dependence?

During Alcohol Awareness week 2013, Equinox Care are highlighting personal testimonies from people affected by alcohol.

In Kay's case, her older sister Annie started drinking when she was 14 - Annie developed alcohol dependence later in life, resulting in homelessness, serious health problems and family breakdown.

Kay's experience is indicative of the impact on the family of alcohol. Kay provided care and support to Annie for 20 years, after she progressed into alcohol dependence.

"One day Annie rang me out of the blue," Kay explains, "begging me to come and get her. She was homeless in Croydon. I found her at eleven o’clock at night, sitting on the street outside this nightclub, she looked awful, she had been begging for money for drink. She was so unwell. I brought her to my place."
