Equinox's Aspinden Wood service is used as a case study to demonstrate good practice in the new and timely publication from DrugScope: "It's About Time: Tackling Substance Misuse in Older People".

The paper points out that it is crucial for older people to have a choice of service. They often have different needs from younger service users. That is something that Equinox has understood for a long time. Equinox Aspinden Wood provides a unique service for people over 40 who would like to reduce their drinking and improve their health. The service is not judgmental and does not promote a narrow set of ideas about recovery. Instead we work with people to find ways in which they can lead healthier, longer lives in a comfortable home environment.

The men and women who live at Equinox Aspinden Wood still drink alcohol but, with our help, manage their drinking so that their health improves. The service users spend much of their time out in the local community. We also assist them to reconnect with their families. Relationships with siblings, children and grandchildren have often broken down as result of their years of heavy drinking and it is valuable for them to make these connections again and reconcile with their relatives.

At Equinox, we make a reality of recovery as "an individual, person-centred journey" (a quote form the Government's Drug Strategy). Aspinden Wood is an example of that work in action."
