Involving service users in Brighton's 'Lively Cities' programme

The Equinox service user representative for the Brighton Alcohol Outreach Service, Hayley, has been involved in a consultation exercise regarding the future use of an area of green space in central Brighton.

The work is part of the EU assisted ‘Lively Cities’ (LICI) programme - a four-year project aiming to strengthen communities by reclaiming public space for public use.

In September 2011, Hayley was mandated by other street drinking service users to speak on their behalf about the needs and hopes of this group. This forms part of a consultation to create options for the transformation of the area.

The green space is frequently used by street drinkers and in the meetings Hayley stressed eloquently that service users were keen to be part of the solution rather than simply a problem. Street drinkers will attend a number of viewings at which the 5 proposals submitted for the site will be voted on.
